What are the most common interview questions?
Whatever the role, most interviews include some version of these 10. A short, true answer to each covers a large part of almost any interview, and YoodaAI's role pages add the questions specific to each job.
- 1Tell me about yourself.A two-minute summary of who you are at work, what you have done that fits this job, and why you are here.
- 2Why do you want this job?Whether you know what the role involves and have a reason beyond needing a job.
- 3Why are you leaving your current job?Whether you are moving towards something. Stay positive and don't criticise your employer.
- 4What is your greatest strength? One strength that matters for this role, backed by an example.
- 5What is your biggest weakness?Self-awareness: a real weakness and what you are doing about it.
- 6Tell me about a time you disagreed with someone at work. How you handle conflict: calmly, with evidence, and with the work in mind.
- 7Tell me about a time you failed.Whether you own your mistakes and learn from them.
- 8Where do you see yourself in five years?Whether your plans fit what the role can offer.
- 9Why should we hire you?A short case that links your experience to what they need.
- 10Do you have any questions for us?Interest and preparation. Always have two or three ready.
What types of interview questions are there?
Most interviews mix 4 kinds: behavioural questions about what you have done, situational questions about what you would do, technical or role-knowledge questions, and questions about your motivation. Some roles add a case study, a coding task or a design exercise.
- Behavioural“Tell me about a time…”Answer with one real example: the situation, what you did and the result.
- Situational“What would you do if…”Talk through your reasoning step by step, and say what you would check first.
- Technical and role knowledge“How does … work?”Be precise and give an example. If you don't know, say so, then reason it through.
- Motivation“Why this role?”Be specific to this company and this job, not to working in general.
How should you practise interview questions?
Out loud, from memory, and over several days. Reading an answer makes it feel familiar; saying it without notes shows whether you actually know it. A YoodaAI mock interview tests exactly that, with 5 questions you haven't seen, each scored out of 100.
Answer a question, compare your answer with an outline, then try again a day or two later.
How should you use the answer outlines?
As a skeleton, not a script. Each of the 5 outlines on a YoodaAI role page says what the interviewer is checking and the points a strong answer covers, in order. Fill them in with your own examples; a memorised answer sounds memorised.
We wrote these questions from the formats these interviews commonly follow. They are not taken from any particular company, and a real interviewer will word them differently.
